The Coalition for Women’s Health in Africa (COWHA) and the Coalition of Blood for Africa – CoBA came together for a joint blood donation drive in partnership with PUMWANI MATERNITY HOSPITAL in Nairobi.

This collaboration highlights our shared commitment to advancing maternal and newborn health — because blood saves lives.

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) remains one of the leading causes of maternal deaths in Africa. Access to safe and sufficient blood can be the critical factor that determines whether a mother survives childbirth. By strengthening blood donation initiatives, we help ensure that lifesaving blood is available when it’s needed most.

PUMWANI MATERNITY HOSPITAL — the largest maternity hospital in East and Central Africa — delivers thousands of babies each year and plays a pivotal role in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality across the region. Initiatives like today’s blood drive directly support facilities like Pumwani in responding swiftly to emergencies such as PPH, safeguarding the lives of mothers and newborns.

In a show of solidarity and action, Africa Health Business staff donated seven pints of blood, potentially saving up to 21 lives. (Each pint can help up to three patients in need.)
